Voice decapitated

(scroll down for English translation)

Jij?

I just don’t get it… Beatrice de graaf – Dutch terrorist expert- sits as a table guest at the talkshow Op1… they’re going to talk about the terror of Corona. Really? Is this really happening?

She (Beatrice) mentions that the real terror took place in Paris today, but the talkshow hosts (Hugo Logtenberg and Sophie Hilbrand) ignore her statement and draw the attention to Corona and to our king who – despite corona – went on holiday.

I- do-not-get-it. And believe me, I’m expressing myself very carefully now. Is Corona really the only news that’s worth mentioning? Is it all we can talk about? Dear media: what are you doing?

Media: You are beheading yourselves. You are depriving yourselves of your voice by this ridiculous autofocus on Corona.

A teacher has been murdered! In the heart of Paris. Cut the throat and, according to some sources, decapitated. And that because – in the context of freedom of speech – he talked and showed the cartoons of Mohammed. As a teacher I am deeply shocked. This could have happened to me. I also discuss freedom of speech and I also dare to confront in my lessons. You don’t help students by always making it easy on them. You don’t teach them to by never confronting them… and certainly not when you, as a teacher, have to take into account what any radicalized parents could think of you.

For those who think: “You live in the Netherlands and work at a fairly white school …” Think again. How long before the terror hits our doorstep unannounced? I have already experienced (years ago) that told a bad behaving student to leave class and that the mother – before the lesson ended- arrived at my door in a very verbally aggressive state. And it was in that same year (over 10 years ago) that a student in the pulled a gun … that the police came to school every single week … Whoever thinks it cannot happen in the Netherlands or wherever, is blind,  in my humble opinion.

Several years ago I had a series of lessons on manipulation versus freedom of speech. I thought it through, knew it could get tricky.  I had woven some very unfair and manipulative actions of my own into the lessons. Because it is one thing to know what manipulation is. But it is quite another to feel what it does to you when you are a victim of it. And in order to achieve real understanding it sometimes is important to reach the mind with the feeling, especially for some students.

Some students got angry and almost exploded… Some of them stepped indignantly to my boss… But when I gave them a look in the mirror and explained what happened, what I wanted them to learn, they got very quiet. One student said “This looks like the-fucking-Wave (film).” Years later they still talked about those lessons. About how it felt, what it did to them … and how much they learned from it.

If I had taken into account that I would offend any radicalizing parents, or parents who would come screeming at my door .. I would never have taught them that lesson. Those students would never have felt that lesson.

A teacher is murdered because he defended and taught about our fundamental right “freedom of speech”. And what is the media doing… they are talking about the king who goes on vacation.

I-do-not-get it. Do you?
